🔵 1. Fist of the Blue Sky Is a Prequel to Fist of the North Star
Set in 1930s Shanghai, Fist of the Blue Sky tells the story of Kenshiro Kasumi, the predecessor of the original Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.
The manga explores the roots of Hokuto Shinken long before the apocalypse hit.
🖼️ 2. The Art Style Is More Refined and Cinematic
Compared to the gritty black-and-white look of Fist of the North Star, this series features richer shading, more detail, and a 3D-like depth.
Artist Tetsuo Hara significantly evolved his style—many fans were stunned by the leap in visual quality.
🇨🇳 3. The Story Is Set in Pre-War Shanghai
A rare choice for a shonen manga, the setting is historical: 1930s Shanghai, a city filled with political tension, gang wars, and foreign influence.
This gives the story a unique tone—a mix of martial arts and gritty historical drama.
🤝 4. The Word “Bōya” (Friend) Becomes a Central Theme
The bond between Kenshiro and his close friends is at the heart of the series.
The repeated use of the term “Bōya” (boy, but also friend) gives the story a softer emotional edge that balances out the violence.
❤️ 5. Like Fist of the North Star, It’s Ultimately About Love
Despite the intense action and bloodshed, Fist of the Blue Sky—like its predecessor—is deeply rooted in themes of love, loyalty, and emotional pain.
It’s not just about fighting; it’s about protecting what truly matters.

Author’s Note
Fist of the Blue Sky came out more than a decade after Fist of the North Star ended.
I remember being surprised by how much the artwork had changed—
the rough, stark black-and-white style evolved into something fuller, more three-dimensional.
While the tone is different, this series gave us a deeper look into the roots of Hokuto Shinken.
The friendship between characters—especially the word “Bōya”—left a strong impression on me.
And just like Fist of the North Star, it reminded me that behind all the fists and blood,
love is what ties it all together.
